In normal parlance an orphan is a child without any parent to take care. But in social parlance the word orphan has got a different meaning.

Every child by birth is innocent. He/she does not know what is right and wrong. A child is very receptive to the happenings around him/her. Whatever acts done by the elders in the surrounding, the child keenly observes and emulates to follow the same either in speech, acts, movements etc.

If a child is having parent who is well educated and has learnt good moral values of life, that parent can bring the child in right environment and the child right from the tender age gets trained to become a good citizen.

But if a child is having no parent or if with parent, who is illiterate and leads life in darkness unaware of the moral values of life, the child born in such environment will also lead life in darkness. That child thinks that the filthy environment, language, carefree vagabond life followed by the people around him/her is the world and that child which grows in that environment is deprived of good education, moral values. Ultimately this child becomes a criminal or a liability to the society.

Thus in social parlance, whether the child is having a parent or not, if the child does not receive a helping hand at the tender age either from the parents or from the society and is deprived of right environment, education, food, thoughts, actions at the right age, that child is an orphan.

Man is God's creation and hence he/she is noble by birth. But the environment and circumstances are the sole cause which decides his/her fate.

If we see at the gross root level, basically criminalism is prevailing among the people who are affected by poverty, illiteracy and unemployment.

Because of poverty, a person could not get right education and hence illiterate. Because of illiteracy he/she could not get right job and hence unemployed. Because of unemployment the person is facing poverty.

Every person had to feed his/her stomach and for this needs money. When a person is affected by poverty, illiteracy or unemployment, in order to survive he/she had to take some avocation and for them the immediate avocation is created by unscrupulous politicians who engage the youth as keys and use them in unlawful and criminal acts. These politicians exploit these vulnerable people for their petty benefits.

If we see the background of most of the criminals they are either orphan, destitute, poor or deprived ones and being deprived of basic education, love and affection either from the parents or from the society.

If we observe the children in the slums, streets and poor colonies they at their tender age learn how to drink, smoke, engage in immoral activities etc. The youths are engaged in criminalism. The child observes these youths and gradually follow their footsteps and shape themselves into criminals in due course of time.

An orphan, destitute, deprived, slum and street children are in a most vulnerable position and they are made scapegoats to take criminalism.

There is a growing social imbalance between Haves' and Have Nots'. Individuals form the society. Individual development should bring in social development. But in India, most of the people are still below poverty line.

Rich and educated are developing up in life, while the poor and illiterate people, who form the majority are going down resulting in a big gap between haves and have nots which results in social imbalance. This results in the society, affected by increasing criminalism like robbery, decoity, theft, communal riots etc.

Every person in the society has got equal responsibility towards his/her family and the society. For every person, family and society should be like two eyes. One should fulfill his/her personal and social obligations with equanimity. Then only one can lead a balanced life and thus can bring a balance in the society.

Rich and educated people who are well settled in life should extend a helping hand to those needy - socially and economically backward children.

As a social being one should work for eradication of poverty, illiteracy and unemployment from the society.

If illiteracy is eradicated, one can be trained in some avocation according to his/her aptitude which will fetch a reasonable job to run a decent life by which way we can eradicate poverty.

If we can work for eradication of poverty, illiteracy and unemployment from the society, we can bring down the gap between haves and have nots and thus gradually we can bring down criminalism and all social evils from the society. Thus we can able to build a strong country.

The main objective of Balagurukulam is to up bring orphan, destitute, deprived, street and slum children, who live life in darkness without knowing the moral values of life. Here we take these less fortunate children at the tender age of 3 to 8 years, before they know about the world and teach them good moral values of life, train them in yoga, meditation, patriotism, Mahatma Gandhi's Ahimsa philosophy etc. We also train them to bring out their inner talents and shape them into good citizens. We take care of these children till they stand on their own feet.

Though the problem is like a ocean before us, what we are doing is like a drop of water in a ocean. Even if we can change a few handful of such deprived children in our lifetime, we can give real meaning to our birth.
